[Product Description]
The Kujira-Shaku is a measuring ruler using the traditional Japanese shakkanhō system of units.
The correct reading of “鯨尺” is “kujira-jaku.”
The name comes from the fact that it was originally made from whale baleen.
Unlike the “Kanejaku” (carpenter’s ruler) used in construction, where one shaku is about 30.3 cm, one shaku in Kujira-Shaku measures approximately 38 cm.
Therefore, for example, a six-shaku loincloth (“rokushaku fundoshi”) measures about 228 cm, not about 182 cm.
